Random road trips are fun

A couple of weeks ago, on a wednesday night, Lisa, Paul, Mick and myself were talking about places in Tasmania that we had been to, ones we hadn't been to, places we liked and places we didn't like.  Lisa mentioned that she had never been to Strahan, and so the plans were made! We were going on a random roadtrip to Strahan that very weekend!

SATURDAY
  • Meet at Paul's house
  • Leave by 8:50am
  • 10km out of New Norfolk - lose phone reception
  • The best of the sixties CDs (there were two discs!)
  • Singing in the car

  • A stop in Tarraleah
  • A stop in the very centre of Tasmania
  • Red team and blue team (paul and Lisa are both wearing red. Mick and myself are both wearing blue)

  • Lots and lots and lots of bends
  • Me trying not to be car sick in Mick's Alpha!
  •  Queenstown - the waterfall, the public toilets (bad, bad mistake!), the gravel oval

  • STRAHAN (4 hours later)
  • FOOD - banjos for lunch
  • An encounter with the town crazy - but nto really - just a very loud screaming, running scary looking father protecting his child
  • Strahan accomodation reception - red team/blue team reappear. We are asked by the lady behind the counter if we are in teams and in a race!
  • Book a cottage for the night - pay TV a must - guaranteed reception for the nights footy final - saints vs pies (Me - St kilda. Mick - Collingwood!)
  • Walk to Hogarth falls - so very pretty

  • Drive to macquarie Heads (potholes galore)
  • walk along the beach in the wind as far as we could go - well, as far as the tide would allow us to go

  • Nap time for a couple hours in the cottage
  • Dinner at the pub - delicious!
  • The water comes out in a blue bottle - "I thought you said it would be brown water Paul." - Classic Lisa, loved it!
  • Dessert - 3 massive scoops of valhalla icecream - $5 in a tub!! Amazing! we all got a tub each!
  • FOOTBALL! Go Sainters - we kicked the pies butts! (I was very good and didn't bag out Mick very much - I controlled myself)
  • Walk around Strahan at night
  • Tv watchin - paralympics - "more dolphin-like than a dolphin" - talking - late night!

Notes from Saturday:
  • Mick's alpha is very nice - the suspension in the back however - me and Lisa were flying every time we went over a bump - quite hilarious for the boys to watch I believe.
  • I apparently get car sick on bends.  At least I didn't throw up
  • It is much more fun to watch the football with someone who goes for the other team, especially when your team wins ;-)
  • Valhalla icecream is absolutely delicious!
  • We all love to bag each other out - a lot.
  • Paul likes to play jokes on nicole - he sent her a message (as he was the only one with reception) to tell her we arrived safely - well that is what we asked him to tell her away.  It turns out he sent her one that said something like "hey, we had a little accident, but we all arrived safely". Followed by "the doctor said I will regain full use within a few days".  Poor Nicole nearly had a heart attack I think.

SUNDAY

  • We are all woken up insanely early by Lisa's alarm that she forgot to turn off from the previous day - it beep LOUDLY for ages - at 6.15am!!!
  • Breakfast at Banjo's - 7.15am
  • Tickets for cruise
  • Packed up and left the cottage
  • Got on the boat - Lady Franklin II - for our cruise up the Gordon River.
  • Met Kelly (ha ha ha) - didn't get a photo unfortunately
  • Took our seats and settled in for the day.
  • Met Justin

    (this is Justin)

  • The cruise is underway. I love this cruise.  We did it a few years ago on our Woolley family trip to Strahan. I remember it rained then (it was summer).  It rained this time as well - but only for the second half of the day.
  • Went out the front of the boat for the journey out to Hell's gates. This is the best part of the cruise. It is so rough and windy and bouncy and just pretty much fun!!

  • Me and Lisa stayed out the front for a while - talking and taking photos.

  • Cruising up the Gordon river
  • First stop - for a little walk around this little island to look at all the trees - it smelt so good! started to rain a little. We laughed at "Poncho family" who had been sitting in front of us.

  • Got back on the boat - buffet lunch! Yummo. Kelly totally helped us out and gave us our plates first so we got to eat first!
  • Me and Lisa got free drinks from Justin
  • Second stop - Sarah Island
  • This place is pretty cool.  It is where the convicts were first put when they came to the west coast of Tassie.  There were some cool stories told by our crazy old man guide.

  • It started to POUR with rain here.
  • Mick was picked to be the "first recorded streaker in Australia" in the story. haha. He was not impressed that Paul didn't get picked on for his hair!
  • We were listening to the stories....until it was raining so bad that we were getting soaked.  We went and sat under the big green tarpaulin that was set up for the rest of the tour.
  • Got back to the boat early. We were frozen, so me and Lisa went and had a chat to Kelly while ordering our Hot chocolates from her - she gave them to us for free.
  • The boys were not impressed we got them for free and didn't get them any.
  • They went to get their own. Mick had to pay, and Paul got his free - Ha ha ha. Classic!

  • Cruised back into Strahan - i think we may have all fallen asleep at some point.

(Strahan)

(Our cottage - we stayed in the left hand side)

  • After getting back into Strahan, our roadtrip started again!
  • Headed out to Zeehan - just for Paul to see - he had never been there before.
  • Back to Queenstown, and then the journey really began.
  • For more or less the whole 4 hours in the car on the way back, I was curled up in the back with the window open (it was freezing) just so that I didn't feel car sick.  It worked.
  • Had a few stops along the way - breaks for me to stop feeling ick, and a few toilet stops.
  • The little green bus - it was going very very slow up the hill to Tarraleah. We eventually overtook it. About 15 minutes later we stopped for a break. As we were stopped, the green bus over took us. Sigh. But when we got to Ouse, we over took it again! haha.
  • Got back to New Norfolk. The competition begins. We got reception back on our phone. Whoever got the most messages won. Mick's phone beeped first - he had 3. About 5 minutes later my phone beeped. I had 4. Lisa could not find her phone.  We discovered she had left it in the cottage in Strahan (haha - oops!)
  • I won!
  • Got back to Paul's, said goodbye to each other.
  • In the car with Lisa on the way to Matty and Nicole's house - guess what! The Green bus went past us again! ha ha ha. It was quite amusing.
  • The roadtrip is over!
Notes from Sunday:
  • Paul's hair is indestructible. On the boat, lisa mick and my hair went crazy in the wind. Paul's did not move! It was even pretty much intact after the pouring rain too! go to mohawk!!
  • After getting soaked in the rain - didn't laugh at "Poncho family" again.
  • A few days later when Lisa got her phone back - she had only received one message on the weekend - I still won!
  • We discovered that Kelly has a boyfriend (bad luck boys)
  • Road trips are FUN!!

Thanks to Lisa for the photos she took - and letting me steal them :-)

The accommodation lady probably thought you were in the Amazing Race!!!! At least you weren't wearing all pink, like the stupid girl teams on that show.

Sounds like fun - I have still never been to Strahan, because I missed out on the Great Woolley Adventure.
